WWII Pacific theatre war films only...

Recommended Posts

A few from the Japanese perspective:

"Letters from Iwo Jima",  this was much better than "Flags of our Fathers" IMHO

"Eternal Zero", heavy on the melodrama at times but it was still a good watch and interesting to see the Pacific Air War from the Japanese persepective

There's a good reason why I wouldn't list any of those... John Wayne.

Edit: thought that I'd better explain that I find JW to be a terrible actor; tolerable in a few Westerns but dire (i.e. simply John Wayne) in almost everything else. Some of the war films may have been better were he not in them, but not all of them, some are just awful with or without him.

Not a movie but a mini series well worth watching!

Didn't like it as much as BoB in the beginning but with every time I watched it I liked it more.

I really enjoyed it when Pacific first came out.  I've watched it at least a couple more times.

"The Pacific" is GREAT! Probably my 2nd favorite mini-series of all time right behind "Band of Brothers".  I think the "weakness" of "The Pacific" in comparison to "Band of Brothers" is the writing....  You don't really latch onto the men like you do in "Band of Brothers", at least I didn't.... Was it because they jumped around to different units and back at the home front? Not sure... but it just didn't feel as cohesive as "Band of Brothers" which stuck mainly with the men of Easy Company of the 506th.

I'm really hoping "Masters of the Air" delivers on the quality of "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific"... I've become kinda skeptical with how long it's taken and the massive use of CGI (especially in a post "Top Gun: Maverick" and "Devotion" world...) but we'll see, whenever it finally releases....

Here's an obvious one. Very worthy and far better than the Michael Bay horror that is 'Pearl Harbor'.

I view Pearl Harbor in the same vein as Titanic. If you can ignore the "romance" and appreciate the rest of the cinematography and grandeur on the screen, it's actually pretty good entertainment. I wouldn't view either as a documentary.

And Wheels, don't forget two of my favorites as a kid:

Flying Tigers

The Flying Leathernecks

Two good John Wayne movies @Boba Fett. 😎

I skipped Flying Tigers since that took place in the CBI but I missed Flying Leathernecks.

Gave The Fighting Seabees another watch yesterday afternoon and I still found it enjoyable. I would have preferred to have been able to watch it without commercials but you take what you can get when it is being shown for free.

@Chief_Mouser, I can't disagree with your statement that JW always plays JW no matter the genre. For me that was never a negative viewing experience.

Of course JW always played JW... that's what I liked about him and that's why I will still watch any of his films when they come up on TV.

I don't want him to be playing different characters in different personas, I want him to be ''John Wayne''.

I guess a lot of people were expecting a similar "journey" like in BoB.

But The Pacific just has another focus - it took me a few times till it clicked for me. While in BoB you accompany a unit over a long time in The Pacific you'll get to see a lot of different individuals and you can see how they fare over the duration of the war and their change of character.

Meanwhile I just love both shows.

Have to post my one of my all time favorite movies that just happens to be about the war in the Pacific, "Empire of the Sun". I LOVE this movie and not just because of the Mustang scene (which obviously doesn't hurt the film).  Its probably my favorite Steven Spielberg film besides "Saving Private Ryan" and "Jurassic Park".

John Wayne. I don't want to make this a JW parade, but for my 2 cents worth Sands of Iwo Jima is great even if some of the other JW war films get a little worn out after a while. IMHO his best movies are The High and the Mighty (still a flying movie) and The Searchers which is above and beyond JW's usual fare and one of John Ford's best directorial efforts. I can watch any of the JW war flicks on any given day and enjoy them but these 3 films standout from the crowd.

One non-JW PTO flick  that I always enjoyed was Flattop with Sterling Hayden, because there carriers of course!

Anything with the Duke in it is a must see for me. Especially 'In Harms Way' as mentioned above. A quality film.

Surprised no one has mentioned this one. A classic. Humphrey at his best.
