What a fun little bird, with the typical Grumman Iron works spunk.  Need to finish up some of the mappings, but no biggie.

Got Friends got this right.

Some more shots of the wildcat, really really loving flying this girl around. Getting me excited to fly this in Combat Pilot one day!!! Cockpit is simple and user friendly, quite easy to get her started and flying, and just look at her!! Such a utilitarian, stout looking aircraft, and I LOVE these early war paintjobs.

Agreed MM, I'm really having a lot of fun with the Wildcat.  Kudo's to Got Friends.  It'll carry us through for a little bit, until we get our CP.  😁

Over on Discord, it appears FlyingIron Simulations is creating a B-17G module.  Cool!  Anything FI is solid!

I really hope the they get the systems modelling right. A2A really set the bar high with their module. But I would definitely buy that module.

been having a lot of fun flying the Turkey (in MSFS2020).  Just flew from KIWA to Palm Springs, and then a Carrier off of Cali.  Good stuff!

Do you need a 3rd party add on for carrier stuff in MSFS2020 or is there one you can use in the stock sim?

The MSFS F-14 comes with some carrier landing/launch points, (Forrestal class).  I already have the Mil-Tech Super Carriers, British Carriers, and Amphibious Ships,  and it works great with the MSFS 2020 HB F-14.  Mil-Tech has some Carriers that actually move and are not stationary points.  (Looking forward to Mil-Tech's WWII Carriers, which will have the Big E, for my F4F, and F6F).

I just flew out of KIWA, but had to land at Desert Center.  Originally planned to land in Palm Springs, but the weather front in CA/AZ is soup right now.  Hence, I went back to Desert Center to top off, (noting things were still clear there when I flew over it).  Only had a 40% fuel load for the original flight.  After landing I made Jester get off his A$$ and help me on load some JP4, (pretty sparse place around there, but at least they had fuel).  Yes, Jester is still an A$$hat in the MSFS version like he is in the DCS one, but he is what he is... 🙂

I soon departed Desert Center towards my destination, (USS Ford), which was off the South Cali coast.  I had Jester setup the TACAN for the Mil-Tech Carriers, (CVN-78), and I was able to vector into the Ford just fine.  I hit the 3 wire, and all is cool....  🙂

Comparing the MSFS vs DCS versions of the Turkey, no doubt, no guns and missiles you can shoot.  But I think folks know that going in. The cockpits of both look great, (I'm using a Varjo Aero).  The MSFS version is limited by Asobo's modeling.

Here's the sweet point.  If you currently own the DCS F-14, go to HB's website and you can get a coupon for $10 off of your MSFS version purchase.   Just buy via HB's store front and not the M$ Market Place.

In short, I feel the HB F-14 is the best looking, best handling module in MSFS2020.  With both the FlyingIron and Got Friends WWII birds being in a close second.  Though I can never count out the PMDG DC-6, (she's an Engineering marvel to fly)

FWIW,

-Jav

Flyin' the Hump today.

From India, Sookerating (VE24) to Dali Airport (ZPDL), China. Used the A2A Comanche, of course. Real time, real weather.

The weather on departure was questinable, as Monsoon season just started. But if I need to bring three people and 91 kg of baggage to China, then it has to be ok.

1.jpg.69a030ffa0bed9327b0a526aaf77a4b2.jpg

At least the airport is big enough for a heavy aircraft, almost max T/O weight and about half the fel load; the distance is short, just a 185 nm.

2.jpg.7050b9346af48c01c7d824d72b20c4b7.jpg

As I climb, I wonder if I could see anything at the first mountain ridge. 14'000 ft. cruise altitude should bring me over most hilltops, but it is about the max. the Comanche can give me at max weight.

3.jpg.d9afa64e3e21d1af452c8c60e36cf743.jpg

Ew. I'd hate going over the ridge blind.

5.jpg.f49394479b17df0fcdfecb1aa04d8590.jpg

But it is kind of clearing up and I fly around the rain squalls.

6.jpg.4e1aad31f7d6f54cafcdcdcb632f960a.jpg

Everybody starts lifting their buttocks as we approach the first ridge to cross into Burma.

8.jpg.06b9bb375065a38e0370fad226172337.jpg

Found a suitable place to cross, but here, the air is rather bumpy. As I was looking for a suitable pass, the carb iced and I lost power and altitude. At least the heater works in a swift manner and I regained altitude to 14k ft. cruising altitude just in time.

9.jpg.63e105ed2f874a601bdd5b30d13ccd6e.jpg

Burma presents a weird jungle landscape, a bassin at ~2500 ft. elevation with very few places to land should one be forced to. It is all about keeping speed and altitude.

10.jpg.f2d4f65161ad83216bf1c350c93c06ef.jpg

Crossing into China again makes 14'000 ft. a very low choice.

11.jpg.5f31b09820cd833c64ea96d8d39eed0b.jpg

At 13'500 ft., you need to put vaseline on the underbelly to cross the really great wall.

12.jpg.303d1e6dcc26950bf43b8c23ff21961e.jpg

But past that, it gets easy. The atmosphere gets much drier and weather is generally better towards Kunming it seems, although terribly bumpy at the moment. I have three PAX puking in sync for the last half of an hour.

Just past the small lake is a bigger lake. My destination is at the far end of that lake. Easy to navigate, despite receiving the beacons in China only close to destination. The NDB back in Putao, Burma helped a lot getting here.

13.jpg.ba69baddb42efb7999674831d2ccba7c.jpg

Situated at 7000 ft on this little plateau, it is not a trivial destination. I have significant crosswind from starboard it seems while coming in toward RWY 17. I land her on the right wheel. About 13 knots wind from about 90°.

As I taxi to the parking, my engine dies at idle. Note to self, lean the engine sufficiently for taxiing!

Flying this route with the old crates is an unsung kind of heroism in its own right. Although in the end all went well for me, without a carb heater and a pitot heater, I'd be dead on the slopes up there. Or landed back at Vijaynagar Advanced Landing Ground (VE91) instead. If the weather had been slightly worse, icing on the plane might well have negated any attempt to cross. I don't think flying in these places ever had anyone concerned about "enemy fighters".
