Major Lee
Someday, I would like to see the Corsair on a carrier heading to battle. Would be an epic bird to fly. What's not to love? An R2800 and six fifties! This is the FG-1D at the Kalamazoo Airzoo. 11

And the earliest carrier-borne corsairs were from armored carriers. I hope we get them one day. Those gentlemen knew how to fly the Corsairs. 🙂 11

Rjel
I haven't been to the Air Zoo in six years. I don't recall seeing a Corsair there then. They had the Wildcat and an SBD under restoration at that time. Neither looked like much then. I've got to get back down there soon. Edited May 5 by Rjel

I saw it fly at an airshow, piloted by (late) LTCMDR Dale Snodgrass, way back when.

IckyAtlas
This image from javelina, shows well the wear and tear these planes in combat operation had to endure. Sometimes in addition they were peppered with holes that had to be patched, creating even more surface bruise.

Skelthos
The scale of manufacturing we achieved during WW II is staggering. We went from a little over 6,000 planes manufactured in 1940 to over 96,000 manufactured in 1944.
Major Lee
The book America's Hundred Thousand is a fantastic read about that very topic! Incredible information about the production of America's fighter aircraft in WWII, along with details of build numbers and model details. I highly reccomend it for any complete aviation library. 5
