For anyone in the Southern California area this weekend the aircraft that Planes of Fame will be flying fits right in with the theme of this forum. This Saturday, July 01, 2023, Planes of Fame will be flying their SBD-5 which is an actual PTO combat aircraft.

I met Harald Bauer at one of the monthly events at Planes of Fame in 2012. As a 17 year old teenager Harald flew the He-162 as a factory pilot from the factory to the front lines during the war. Of the 65 factory pilots that started with Harald only 5 which included himself survived the war.

Harald flew black op reconnaissance missions for the US Navy during the Korean war.

The absolute best line from his interview when I saw him at Planes of Fame in 2012 is when he is telling about the time he is at a party with several US fliers from the war and he states that he was at a particular airfield on a specific date. This statement causes one of the pilots to claim that was not possible because his bomb group was attacking that airfield on that date. At this point he states, I never said I was on your side, or something to that effect. 🙃

Sadly Harald passed in 2018 at the age of 90 after a fall.

It's an excellent museum overall. Most of their aircraft are airworthy and get up a couple times of year (or more depending). I've been many times, though, I've put a continent between me and there now. I still PayPal them monthly from afar.

The monthly fly dates have good hangar presentations before the flights that are informative. Best of all, it sounds like they are going to revive their airshow which is among the best for us WWII fans. Both are well worth attending.

Hangar Talk and Flying Demo of the Curtiss P-40N Warhawk

6th of January, 2024

This Saturday – January 6, 2024 – we kick off the New Year with a great series of presentations for “Hangar Talk” and a thrilling “Flying Demo” as we fly one of the Museum’s World War II, combat veterans – the Curtiss P-40N “Warhawk.”

Doors to the Museum will open at 9:00am.  Regular admission prices are in effect and Museum Members always get in free!

Hangar Talk Begins at 10:30am

Here’s what’s in store for “Hangar Talk” . . .

2024-Student-Art-Contest_use.jpg.9e1fd55ec04d6040d0957e7a3747d072.jpg

2024 Student Art Contest Awards Ceremony

After reviewing and judging hundreds of entries, we’re ready to present our winning entries to you.  The theme for this year’s annual art contest was “Journey to the Stars!” and students from across the country in grades 1st through 6th responded with some pretty amazing works of art.  We’ll be presenting awards for First, Second, and Third place entries in three categories and our young artists will be on hand to accept their prizes.

Medal-of-Honor_Frank-Luke_use.jpg.bcbac69f4fcad82cd76e12d552f778df.jpg

Medal of Honor Series: The Balloon Man

We continue our ongoing series focused on one of the most prestigious awards in the world – the Congressional Medal of Honor.  This month, the Museum’s Jim Llano takes us back to the First World War where we’ll meet a bold and daring fighter pilot.  In a remarkable span of only 8 days, he flew multiple high-risk missions and shot down 18 enemy aircraft – including 14 observation balloons.  His is a story of brashness, disobedience, and bravery under the most primitive conditions of aerial combat.

An-Airplane-for-Everyone_use.jpg.37df93a3c06b6637fcbedf1072bfed67.jpg

An Airplane for Everyone

In its first 30 years, the airplane established itself as an important weapon of war, a thrilling entertainment, and a useful means of transport.  There were many in private industry and in government who envisioned a future where everyone would own and operate an airplane.  This is the story of early attempts to put an airplane in every garage – a goal that fell far short of hitting the mark but resulted in new safety measures and technology breakthroughs.

Ted-Talk-Erich-Hartmann-use.jpg.ab1465394ebd1ce878f700bf9576a2ca.jpg

TED Talk – Erich Hartmann: Ace in the Air and Hero on the Ground

The Museum’s Ted Mount will profile one of greatest aces of the Second World War – Erich Hartmann.  This is a story of a man born to fly.  During the war, he flew an amazing number of missions and achieved an unsurpassed number of aerial victories.  Leading by example, he was an inspiration to all who flew with him.  Yet his true courage was in his convictions, and these were demonstrated soundly in the years immediately after the war.  As he always does, Ted will connect the lessons of history with our world of today in a way that will leave us with insight and inspiration.

Flying Demo of the Curtiss P-40N “Warhawk

At 12:15pm, Ken Saltgaver of the Museum will present the “Flying Demo” of the Museum’s Curtiss P-40N “Warhawk.”  Ken will briefly detail the history of the P-40 in World War II and talk about this aircraft – a combat veteran that flew with the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Following Ken’s presentation, Pilot Chris Fahey will fire up the 1,200 horsepower Allison V-1710 inline engine directly in front of the crowd.  After Chris taxis the aircraft away, we’ll hold our Member’s Only Raffle Drawing for some great prizes, including a flight in the Museum’s Vultee BT-13B “Valiant.”  Then Chris will delight us with an aerial demonstration of the “Warhawk” with a flight over the Museum for twenty minutes.  Upon return, guests may meet and ask questions of Chris and learn first-hand what it’s like to fly one of WWII’s most versatile aircraft.

In addition to all of the above, we’ll have food trucks on hand, the Gift Shop is stocked with plenty of great items, our Museum Guides will tell you the stories of the Museum and its world-renowned collection, they’ll be fun for the kids, and our B-17 will be open for visitors to tour the inside.  A great way to spend the day at Planes of Fame!

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Mosquito was still there too.

Fantastic video of the MiG-15 flight Wheels, thank for posting it. Brilliant camera position. One of my favourite early jets.

Impressive how that pilot kept the rudder bubble centered throughout his turns. The mark of a highly skilled pilot.

Also interesting how the controls become, not sloppy but loose, as the pilot comes in to land at the 15.30 mark. To keep centered he had to make some quite pronounced movements of the joystick.

Again wonderful video.

I did not see the windsock but quite often Chino gets some pretty decent winds. That might have been part of the reason he was having to make such pronounced adjustments to the stick while he was landing.

The Ozzie equilavent would be the Temora Aviaton Museum, Temora being 200k's west of Canberra.
https://aviationmuseum.com.au/

When I was living in Canberra (going back 10 years) I would pop out there at least once a month. They flew just about everything, every second weekend - Spitfire MkVIII, Meteor, Sabre, P-40, Hudson, Canberra, A-37, Ryan STM, Wirraway and Tiger Moth.

And every third month they would organise a fly-in, visitor's like the Constellation, Boomerang, P-51, Texan, Hawk 127. The RAAF would usually drop in with an
F-18 and a Hercules. Plus a multitude of private aircraft.

But as usual maintenace costs climbed, and a few (very) wealthy supporters died. Nowadays they hold fly days only 3 to 4 times a year. Still, you can always pop out there and get up close and personal with the aircraft in the hangers.

And I just noticed that they now have 'flight simulators' available for the Spitfire Mk.XVI, P-51 and P-40. https://aviationmuseum.com.au/simulators/
Have no idea what that entails. Guess I'll have to give 'em a call, and maybe pay them a visit after all these years.

I feel a Road Trip coming on! :classic_biggrin:

They had a pretty good turnout today.

pof_2024_feb-03jpg.thumb.jpeg.7a95dd02c69a7c562fbf92458c22849f.jpeg

There was a fairly large size crowd that was watching the Hangar Talk but there were at least half the amount that are seen in the picture that were walking around the compound checking out the planes and vehicles.
