Discussion of Developer Diary #07

I'd love to paint some birds. I used to do that a lot in another SIM that you all know. If you know my name you know how detailed I get. (just a few examples of work below).

À @Jason_Williams

Hello Jason

...

For the skins, I work with GIMP.

Hoping to actively participate in this great adventure.

....

Sadly , but i think you need Substance Painter (3D)  for skinning that planes...      😬

The openness of development and plans. Hope fore the future is enough for me to support this wholeheartedly

It is simply refreshing and unexpected. I feel like I am part of this and will join in any crowdfunding that pops up as far as my economic allow

Great idea outsourcing some skinning to the community.

As a (plastic) modeler i have deep dived IJN colours a lot more than i should. The particular shade of green on this era Zero does elicit many opinions. I fall into the Tamiya XF-76 camp myself. But that colour suits more brand new painted aircraft. And perhaps Midway era zeros are a bit more sun bleached.

Warthunder actually did an interesting take on the colours with one of its A6m2 skins - it has a two tone skin that does highlight the variation in shades.

Good luck!

Fluid Flux is amazing... not sure it works with multiplayer.  I have been using Oceanology... (this is a pic I took out of 5.4 design view)... they just released a new version to work with 5.4.

@Jason_Williams

Beyond the excellent 3D models and intricate skins, how are you developing flight models for aircraft that haven't been flown for many decades? Are you using something like DSix from Birhle Engineering to build a flight model from the 3D model? Reverse engineering the FM from historical data parameters and anecdotal commentary? Also, if you haven't seen this book, "Report of Joint Fighter Conference", it contains extensive data and commentary about a broad variety of fighter aircraft from 1944. This massive fighter fly-off included a captured Japanese Zero. And there's always Kermit Weeks outfit in Florida; they have a few relevant aircraft... 😉 Just curious how you approach this kind of task.

.Y’all should reach out to John parshal and the guys who do unauthorized history of the pacific war podcast. They have done some great episodes on carrier battles and air raids, the cactus air force, New Guinea air campaign and carrier raids. Also look into pappi gunn he modded b25s and a20s to be straffers with a buttload of 50s. That would be tight to raid Rabaul with those on a historical campaignt

Who do we contact if we want to make skins?

Hey Jason. This is all looking really good. I'd also like to participate in skin making. I recently won the B-17 skin contest in that "click cockpit" sim and also have done quite a few IL2/BG skins.

I'll just link two examples:

B-17: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3332180/

and a thread on a "Sharkmouth" FW-190 in IL2/GB: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/67402-fw-190-a3-sharkmouth/#comment-1030719

EDIT:

Seems that the call for skinners was for the Vegas Expo... I'm too late for that. Still, I would really like to participate in making skins for this sim.

As for Substance Painter, I'm pretty well versed in it but don't currently have use for it and am not subscribed. I will re-up if it's needed in order to produce skins.

I hope that Vegas went well for you!
