From the looks of the exit pattern of that hole in his prop blade whatever hit his prop had to have come from somewhere in his 6 O'clock position.

Every time I see that picture the first thought that comes to mind is to wonder how much that hole knocked that propeller out of balance? Bet it made for a bumpy ride home.

1 or two of the cylinders and pistons was knocked off. Radials could work without them  in special if it was the upper. I guess if lower cylinders get hit all oil would soon drain out. 
Radials was thirsty beasts but damn they was more reliable in combat

A P-47 flown by Lt. Richard Sulzbach of the 364th Fighter Squadron, 350th Fighter Group, 12th Air Force on April 1,1945. Lt. Sulzbach had a little run-in with some trees while on a strafing run over Italy. He was able to fly the plane 120 miles back to base and land safely.
