@Sea Serpent Hi M8,here some parts of a Takara Tomy skeleton A6M5 (based on Hasegawa )  covered with self adhesive aluminum foil and transplanted on a old Hasegawa A6M5, just an experiment for some heavy weathering on two old kits collecting dust on my stash.  😂

Beautiful work.

I always enjoyed flying it in 1946 but you had to be really careful landing it or the undercarriage would collapse.

I always found it difficult to survive flying it on the Malaya map...

@Sea Serpent

As a seasoned model maker I have experimented with different methods and materials over the years. today I exclusively use a very very old and out of business bottle of GNOCCHI dark sepia India ink wash without indelible additives. once dry I can remove the excess with a soft, slightly damp cloth. the fact that it is so easily washable allows me not to use thinners or excessively rub the painting I do using Vallejo colours. I love them but I consider them too delicate. with the humbrol enamels or the Tamiya/Gunze I felt more confident in aggressive weathering.

As of today, I'm still looking for an equivalent product to replace the GNOCCHI ink as well as the FUTURE wax…

Mr Hobby's clear acrylic is a good alternative to the floor varnishes. If you thin it down just a bit it works the same way as Future. It dries rock hard and levels itself very well. It also doesn't go yellow over the years.

Some more child labor.

Had my kids do the Airfix Zero and the P40:

a01003b_curtiss-p40b-tomahawk_box-front.thumb.jpg.8827ea13dd559c8c0e5e7bf55cce9232.jpg

These are new moulds (or at least seem to me) and I hoped that they go together easily. Two things they like about puttings models together. 1. Airbrush, 2. Puzzling together the (big) parts. Followed by any procedure that somehow shows getting ahead with the build.

The younger had the P40.

1_2.JPG.f8683b1e406c43aa0fa0b4e7cbcc8aef.JPG

The older had the Zero. Not so many parts in both kits. They also have the "new" assembly method with a single lower part wing, if possible cockpit is set on that part. Also there is only one way to put in the elevators without force.

2_2.JPG.5a50491207828dda120154e17863b94c.JPG

After checking the assembly, figuring out what to paint and where is subject of longer discussions. It also meant that they had to mix the colors as I simply don't have everything at hand. But why should you? If Tamiya can mix colors, so can we. More of a mindset issue.

3_2.JPG.805a6863a1c30ba1d95ba641cdc4699f.JPG

So he younger one went ahead first with proceeding further on the build. Having two at the same time can be a tad overcritical. The hobbybench with the colors is not that far from the laundry, so it is in my best interest to thread carefully.

Easier painting on the sprue. They prefer that.

Nothing like airbrushing though. While it is nice that they like the procedure, in the end doing and doing and doing it, which transports a lot of paint on the plastic. It is true that one should spray in layers, they spray many of them with the same paint...

6_2.JPG.13940570f7dfea0938d0be33007d17ab.JPG

That is more of a fight than one might think, but he managed.

7_2.JPG.c958bddb980a0e6d07eb8ccae58e3cf4.JPG

The reward is more airbrushing.

8_2.JPG.94862b00800e2769772acb5205414d77.JPG

As you can't really go after the manual in putting together the parts without having misery painting, it takes some suggestions.

Finally all assembled.

Some preliminary paneling later...

11_2.JPG.a59d9e5794b74bc9cf96523fd7821efb.JPG

...it turned out that for the black walkway are no stickers. At least it is a trivial shape. That kind of taping, they can do.

12_2.JPG.3cd76e247a878a1efd6065f55e3074df.JPG

Better like this.

13_2.JPG.a6c35c631edae4d51176918d95ae3143.JPG

Decals, again, they can do the big ones. A kids understanding doesn't have any concept about things smaller than 3 mm. But putting makeup on is not that hard.

14_2.JPG.99679b4596e8587cdbbf4c274bec4857.JPG

The older painted details on the Zero.

15_2.JPG.03a2ad8519dd3f147537edd09321dd81.JPG

A bit fiddly getting the cocpit along with the gunsight in, but the parts fit nicely.

16_2.JPG.561ad62fbcc2e56f37f47a15c77cd582.JPG

The good parts of model building: when the big parts come together and suddenly you have an aircraft instead of parts.

17_2.JPG.8a84e132ee0e0df73b0916c953b458db.JPG

..don't drown it man...

18_2.JPG.c762b26d492a11e900d6f163648d6a00.JPG

Oh well. Putting the engine together was a bit irritating. The pin for the prop is too thick and it is not easy to make it thinner while not having it too thin getting the prop on the right way. In the end, it wouldn't turn (I think it would break) but all in the right place. The little outer gear covers had to go, they are very tricky to install and *pling* off goes one from the tweezers into the great void.

The thing with these Airfix kits is, that they have channels for panel lines. The Zero originally was a very clean build, like a Mustang. But what do you do with all those channels?

20_2.JPG.85f88aa305027d8ddf5a3b49f22ab126.JPG

Still nice how the aircraft comes alive with the stickers. Still it would have been nice if he had washed his hands instead of "YesYes!!". Again, using the pencil doing what you're supposed to do with those channels. It's easy like that, even for him.

21_2.JPG.2ac9e429609d93fd4dde069b9cfe3ad9.JPG

It hides the fingerprints as well.

22_2.JPG.272dc1370e94713fa4bfd9b78d594c21.JPG

Then the same treatment of a clear/satin laquer mix to make them finger proof.

23_2.JPG.01c83ac300badf688d7719d5cac75750.JPG

They turned out ok I think.

25_2.JPG.a39d0fe287cdda17130eb09bbfc3d8b4.JPG

Still I am not overly sold on the massive panel lines but they sure make the process easy for kids.

24_2.JPG.6e9ef92753d65e50a06d1963762185f5.JPG

I glued the antennae myself. There's no point otherwise. The kits do come together nicely, but the bad fit for the prop pin is an embarassment.
