The Langley was awfully top heavy and narrow beam. Check out that cruiser behind her, just riding thru the waves. Side rolling sucks so bad, and it's worse if you're pitching too. (We had a boat at a marina near Lake Michigan for years, a SeaRay Select 200. Lake Michigan is rough on small boats. Some days, we just stayed on the Grand River and Spring Lake! Maybe I'll post the video of my drive by boating of the USS Silversides I made some years ago.)

Independence class CVLs probably were top heavy, but I think that photo was taken during a terrible typhoon, the one depicted in the Caine Mutiny, so that’s a pretty extreme sea, and we don’t know it’s ballast state. I’d rather be in that than a destroyer.

when I saw, I thought the same thing.  Must be the perspective of the photo.  I wouldn't imagine the deck dipping down on the bow of a Carrier.

Actually, Akagi’s flight deck *did* slope down, but it was from the island to the stern. Thus, planes landed on an incline.

General plans for USS Wasp. IMO, Wasp has been historically under-represented. I wrote author David Doyle with this opinion and he said not to worry, he is currently working on a book about Wasp. #winning

Do not quote me on this but 90% sure they were actually the crew's hammocks rolled tightly and bundled together. The purpose of placing them around the bridge is to stop shrapnel and splinters (wooden flight decks on many of them) from penetrating.

As a side note, the practice of using hammocks in this manner actually dates back to wooden sailing ships.  Offers some limited protection, as well as not having to find more cargo area and hauling more weight.

Additionally, Zuikaku used hawsers on her island.

Many Midway buffs have read Shattered Sword, and there are many here, I presume.  They go into some depth about the design of the Japanese carriers, and how that factored in.  The Japanese carriers had closed hangars.  So a bomb would detonate in there and since there was no venting, it would just carry down the whole hangar deck.  Being somebody on the hangar decks of Kaga would have been living hell.

Rendition+of+condition+before+scuttling.

I’m not sure the artistic rendition I found on the internet of what happened to Kaga is actually from the Shattered Sword book, but it’s essentially the same as the one presented in there.

Kaga went up fast, too. Off the top of my head I forget which US pilot said it, but after the dive bombing he described looking back and seeing a carrier burning "like a haystack in flames." From the descriptions of the first three that were hit, had to be Kaga. In Shattered Sword there are survivor anecdotes describing the sides of the vessel blowing out with secondary explosions, and I believe SS said Kaga's hangar decks had the highest concentrated number of casualties.

For some reason I love that big barn of a ship. I hope one day we get to fly off and/or attack her.
