Executive Producer Skystreak Productions Jason_Williams Posted June 6, 2023 Executive Producer Skystreak Productions Share Posted June 6, 2023 Dear Pilots, June 6th, 1944 is a date that everyone knows as D-Day on the European front. A momentous event in history. However, two years prior, on June 6th, 1942 the Battle of Midway was ending after several days of intense carrier warfare changing the course of the Pacific War. On June 6th planes from U.S carriers Hornet and Enterprise sunk the Japanese heavy cruiser Mikuma and damaged her sister ship the Mogami. However, the carrier Yorktown which was badly damaged from previous attacks and abandoned by her crew hung on and stayed afloat. A salvage party then boarded her to try and save the big ship. But she was soon torpedoed by Japanese submarine I-168 which caused her to roll over and sink the following morning. In the same attack, I-168's torpedoes also sunk the destroyer Hammond. The Pacific War has countless days of mind numbing destruction and loss of life and unbelievable acts of courage and heroism which makes it so fascinating. Enceladus
Everybody talks about what happened on June 6th 1944 in Normandy but very few talk about the Liberation of Rome two days earlier and in the Pacific I believe there was a Marianas turkey shoot. The actions of those in Italy and in the Pacific near or on June 6th 1944 need to be remembered. 3 hours ago, Jason_Williams said: On June 6th planes from U.S carriers Hornet and Enterprise sunk the Japanese heavy cruiser Mikuma and damaged the destroyer Mogami. Just a quick correction, the Mogami was a heavy cruiser and the sister ship of the Mikuma. Quote Author of Liars in the Cockpit?
