Mysticpuma
A small conundrum, but here goes. P-47N-15-RE 44-88893 (on the right of the picture) flew with the 414th FG and crashed on 15 November 1945 on Iwo Jima due to an engine failure. According to the history of the 414th FG a element of the group travelled by the Escort carrier USS Cape Esperance to Iwo Jima arriving in early July 45. Another element of the 414th travelled by the escort carrier USS Casablanca to Guam in late July 45. Presumably this is one of those ships.
Sea Serpent
Ok, so the ship is either Casablanca or Cape Esperance. So what is your “conundrum” about this? Edited June 21 by Sea Serpent 1

BlitzPig_EL
Well, since the aircraft pictured crashed on Iwo, simple logic makes this the Cape Esperance.

Rjel
I know some pilots, former P-51 ace Urban Drew being one, thought the N model of the P-47 was a dog. Still, it was one lethal looking machine when sitting loaded on the ground. The squared off wing tips really improved the fighter's appearance. At least in my opinion. The wide track landing gear would likely take about 5 minutes time when walking from one to the other too...
BlitzPig_EL
The P47 never really got a chance to do what it was designed for, high altitude interception. It is telling that the P51 was the piston fighter that the Air Force kept in service the longest after the war.

A combination of availability, ease of maintenance and lower operating costs compared to the P-47s and P-38s must've weighed in the decision making. I think though when the Korean War broke out, the Air Force would've loved to have had those P-47s still available in large numbers. For some reason, I never see this same opinion directed toward another navy, like, oh, I don't know... I did a quick search as that I was curious as well. Came across a rather insightful Reddit post, (from about 5 years ago). The author stated that both the Yorktown and Essex class CV's were ordered and being laid down, well before knowing the lessons the RN learned, and started going with armored decks, (1941 or so). It wasn't until the Midway class carriers that the USN switched to armored decks. With the Midway's being laid down in 1943, and being commissioned after the end of the war. Per the author, the time to order and build carriers was a fair amount of cycle time, hence the US couldn't change the construction process that quickly. The author also notes that with the armored flight decks, the US carriers would have had a reduction of aircraft of around 10%. Take if for what it's worth, but it was an interesting read nonetheless... 6 Quote MSI MAG Z790 Carbon, i9-13900k, NH-D15 cooler, 64 GB CL40 6000mhz RAM, MSI RTX4090, Yamaha 5.1 A/V Receiver, 4x 2TB Samsung 980 Pro NVMe, 1x 2TB Samsung 870 EVO SSD, Win 11 Pro, TM Warthog, Virpil WarBRD, MFG Crosswinds, 43" Samsung 4K TV, 21.5 Acer VT touchscreen, TrackIR, Varjo Aero, Wheel Stand Pro Super Warthog, Phanteks Enthoo Pro2 Full Tower Case, Seasonic GX-1200 ATX3 PSU, PointCTRL, Buttkicker 2, K-51 Helicopter Collective Control
JFM
Did the article talk about the lack of armored decks on IJN CVs pre-Taiho? I never see that discussion, just as regards USN ships.
