80th Anniversary of D-Day memorial flight canceled

A long planned memorial flight commerating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day has been canceled due to a tragic fatal crash of a Spitfire. Killed in the crash was Squadron Leader Mark Long. My condolences to all involved, this memorial service will not be the same without the roar of those eighty year old engines. 🙏

The cause has yet to be determined but Sdn Ldr Long called a mayday shortly after take off. The BBMF has had issues with the Mk of Merlin engine in Mk356 a couple of times in past few years. That mk  s also installed in several other BBMF aircraft including the Lanc so the grounding of the flight is prudent until the exact cause is established.
