Wiedmaier
My grandfather was Lt. Louis K. Bliss of VF-72. He enlisted in 1934, and I’m not sure if he was with VF-72 on the Wasp, or just when they were transferred to the Hornet prior to Santa Cruz. He flew the lead for the 2nd CAP off the Hornet on October 26th. If you ever played Il-2: Wings of Prey, it’s his plane you fly for the final mission of the single player campaign. He got two Vals and a Zero that day, but as the Hornet was going down there wasn’t enough room to land all the planes and he ditched in front of a destroyer. When he got back to Pearl he was rotated back as a flight instructor. Sadly, he passed in 1984, when I was only 2. I only know about his adventures because of John Ludstrorm’s remarkable scholarship. Anyone else have ties to the actual Combat Pilots of the era?
