Big thank you for sharing that ZachariasX.  Splendid!  😃

Massive responsibility for the pilot there.  What a beast!  Not the pilot, the plane, lol.

Happy landings,

Talisman

When I got my greedy hands on it, it was still in the hangar, waiting for the carb to be newly made and delivered. An amazing aircraft. I had to considerably perster the the guys responsible for it, as it was in the resoration hangar, not open to public. But it's a Tempest and it is there, what can you do?

At first glance I thought it was a SeaFury.
They look very similar.

I thought exactly the same. I think it's the silver paint.

The trials aircraft was not the same as the production aircraft... it explains that the production versions will have some differences...  interesting stuff!

The Tempest II is intended as a tropical fighter, but the aircraft tested was not fully tropicalised as the air intake filter was disconnected. Additional ventilation is being provided on later production aircraft.

Tempest II, MW.754 was delivered by the Hawker Aircraft Company on 26th February, 1945. The model was not representative of production as the oil cooler was smaller and the shutter control and cowling gills as at present fitted were manually operated, whereas in production models they will be fully automatic and thermostatically controlled.

They must have been in production but weren't in service...

So only the Mk1 Tempest saw combat in WW2? Mk II did not?

Mk. V saw combat. The Tempest Mk.I was only a prototype that featured the wing mounted cooler as the Mk.II had it and was used for the troublesome Sabre IV engine. That arrangement was not trivial, hence the simplified the thing by using the Typoon engine (Sabre II) with a chin mounted cooler as present in the Mk.V at the cost of speed and more drag. They tried diffrent engines, the Tempest III with similar looks as the Tempest Mk.I, but having a Griffon 85.
